Fulbright US Senior Scholar Awards

The US Senior Scholar Awards are for academics, artists or professionals with distinction to pursue research or gain practical experience in New Zealand.

Eligibility

A small number of awards are granted each year for US scholars to lecture and research at a New Zealand institution for three to five months each year.

Full awards are granted to applicants without any additional financial assistance during the award. Partial awards are granted to applicants receiving financial assistance, usually in the form of paid sabbaticals from their home institution.

To be eligible, you must:

  • have an established reputation in your field
  • have a PhD with some recent teaching experience
  • have a letter of invitation from your host institution
  • be able to demonstrate a need to conduct research in New Zealand or show the importance of the teaching contribution to the host institution
  • not have held another Fulbright award in the past two years, and otherwise comply with the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board's policy on Previous Fulbright Grants
  • meet the citizenship requirements of this award:

Citizenship requirements

You are eligible to apply for this award if you:
  • are a US citizen
  • AND are not a permanent resident or citizen of New Zealand
  • AND are not currently living in New Zealand*

* Applicants outside the US who are unable to attend an interview in person may be disadvantaged.

Preference for Fulbright awards is given to candidates who have not had extensive recent experience in New Zealand.

Entitlement

  • NZ$6,500 per month for full awards and NZ$3,250 per month for partial awards
  • international travel of NZ$4,000 for grantee and NZ$4,000 for one dependent (for both full and partial awards)
  • basic health and accident insurance cover up to US$100,000
  • office and computer facilities
  • assistance with locating suitable housing

Award conditions

  • New Zealand immigration documentation must be completed from within the US
  • international travel will only be funded between the US and New Zealand
  • the beginning of your grant should coincide with the start of the New Zealand academic year in February
  • you may be expected to deliver at least one public lecture as part of the Fulbright New Zealand Lecture Series (on material not previously presented in New Zealand) and deliver seminars in at least two other New Zealand higher education or research institutions
  • you will also be expected to participate fully in any activities arranged by Fulbright New Zealand

Fulbright orientation

It was Senator J William Fulbright's mission to build peace through the mutual understanding of cultures. Fulbright applicants and grantees are expected to understand and support this mission. To support this understanding, American grantees are required to attend a Fulbright orientation held each February in Wellington.
