Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Programme

The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Programme provides grants for US academic institutions to host New Zealand academics to teach for one semester or full academic year. Preference is given to institutions that otherwise have limited opportunities to participate in the Fulbright Scholar Programme.

Fulbright Scholars-in-Residence can have a significant impact on U.S. colleges and universities. In addition to teaching courses, scholars give campus-wide and community lectures, help initiate international programs and contribute to curriculum development. Although preference is given to proposals in the humanities or social sciences, other fields focusing on international issues will be considered.

The Fulbright Scholars-in-Residence programme is especially appropriate for small liberal arts colleges, minority-serving institutions, and community colleges, many of which do not often have the opportunity to host visiting scholars.

Entitlement

  • round-trip international air travel
  • a monthly stipend ranging from US$2,500-2,900 (depending on the cost of living in the city where the Scholar will reside)
  • excess baggage, settling-in and professional (books, services and travel) allowances
  • basic health and accident insurance cover up to a maximum of US$100,000
  • an allowance for up to two dependents
  • round-trip international air travel for one dependent if awarded for a full academic year

Host institutions generally propose some cost-sharing, such as a salary supplement for the scholar and/or in-kind support such as housing, meals and travel.

Award conditions

  • scholars who have taught, studied, conducted research, or worked in the United States within the past five years are not eligible to participate in the SIR program, as the program seeks to provide opportunity for Scholars who have not had recent experience in the United States.
  • preference will be given to scholar candidates who have not previously received Fulbright grants.
  • foreign citizens desiring to hold or holding permanent residence in the United States are not eligible for Fulbright awards.

Fulbright orientation

It was Senator J William Fulbright's mission to build peace through the mutual understanding of cultures. Fulbright applicants and grantees are expected to understand and support this mission.
