The Fulbright-Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Senior Scholar Award is for
a New Zealand academic, artist or professional with distinction to conduct
research and/or lecture in the US for three to five months in a field
of indigenous development.
The Fulbright-Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Senior Scholar Award is sponsored by Ngā
Pae o te Māramatanga (New Zealand's Māori Centre of
Research Excellence). One highly prestigious and competitive award is
offered each year to a New Zealand scholar whose area of research/teaching
fits within one of Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga's research
themes.
This award is not intended for the main purpose of undertaking American
degrees or qualifications, completing doctoral dissertations or attending
conferences.
Eligibility
One award is offered each year.
To be eligible, you must:
- show professional distinction, leadership skills and strong ambassadorial
qualities
- have a PhD or the equivalent professional or artistic training or
experience
- plan to undertake research or teaching which fits within one or more
of Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga's research
themes
- not have held another Fulbright award in the past two years, and otherwise
comply with the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board's policy
on Previous Fulbright Grants
- meet the citizenship requirements for this award:
Citizenship requirements
You are eligible to apply for this award if you:
- are a New Zealand citizen
- AND are not a permanent resident or citizen of the US
- AND are not currently living in the US*
* Applicants outside New Zealand who are unable to attend an interview in person
may be disadvantaged.
Preference for Fulbright awards is given to candidates who have not had extensive
recent experience in the US.
Preference for this award will be given to candidates who show promise in
making further contributions in New Zealand in accordance with the Ngā
Pae o te Māramatanga vision
and mission.
Fulbright awards are not granted for medical programmes which include
any clinical activities involving direct patient care.
Entitlement
- US$3,250 per month for partial awards or US $6,500 per month for
full awards for 3-5 months*
- International travel of US$2,000 for grantee and US$2,000 for one
dependent
- Basic health and accident insurance cover up to a maximum of US$100,000
- The opportunity to participate in various programmes and activities
available to Fulbright scholars in the US
* Full awards are granted to applicants without any additional financial
assistance during the award. Partial awards are granted to applicants
receiving financial assistance, usually in the form of paid sabbaticals
from their home institution.
Award
conditions
- You must plan to be in the US for a minimum of three months
- Your award term must fall within the period between 1 December in
the year of application and 31 December of the year following application
- You will need to provide Fulbright New Zealand with evidence of financial
support (or not) from your home institution/employer, and will be required
to undertake a full medical examination
- You must travel on a New Zealand passport, and US immigration documentation
must be completed from within New Zealand
- International travel will only be funded between New Zealand and the
US
- Prior to departure and upon return to New Zealand, you will be required
by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga to fulfil some media requirements along
with presentations to suitable fora of Indigenous scholars and/or community
groups
- If you ever intend to apply for a work permit or permanent residency
in the US, US immigration requires you to have returned to New Zealand
for a minimum of two years before becoming eligible to apply. You also
cannot apply for residency during your Fulbright award. These requirements
are in keeping with the philosophy of the Fulbright exchange programme
so that you return to New Zealand to share your experiences.
Fulbright orientation
It was Senator J William Fulbright's mission to build peace through the mutual
understanding of cultures. Fulbright applicants and grantees are expected to
understand and support this mission.
Application process
- Complete and submit the online application and the Fulbright-Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Senior Scholar Award supplementary form by the deadline
- Submit all support documents to us by the deadline
- Interviews will be held in Wellington in July 2010. Fulbright New
Zealand will pay the costs of travel to Wellington only for applicants
residing in New Zealand
- You will be advised of the outcome of your application by September
2010
