1st May (annually) The Sir Wallace Rowling Memorial Award is to provide a current Fulbright New Zealand Graduate Student in the field of political science, international relations, journalism or international law the opportunity to undertake an internship in Washington DC during their exchange to the US. Fulbright New Zealand offers this award in honour and remembrance of Sir Wallace (Bill) Rowling, a 1955 Fulbright New Zealand exchange teacher to the US, Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1974-1975 and Ambassador to the United States of America from 1985-1988. Sir Wallace was also a major driving force behind the building of New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa. One award is offered each year to a Fulbright New Zealand Graduate Student who shows academic excellence, leadership potential and the ability to be a cultural ambassador for New Zealand. The award is granted to assist with travel and accommodation costs associated with an internship in Washington DC (which are generally unpaid), to be undertaken whilst the grantee is studying in the US on their Fulbright graduate award. The duration of the internship will be a minimum of six weeks, usually undertaken during the Summer break although it can be done at any time of the year with the agreement of the host organisation. * The successful recipient is expected to organise their own internship,
with the advice and assistance of Fulbright New Zealand, the New Zealand
Embassy in Washington, DC and the US Embassy in Wellington. Note that
this internship is not part of the US Congressional Internship Programme
coordinated by the US Department of State.
