Fulbright New Zealand Senior Scholar Awards are for academics, artists or professionals with distinction to lecture and/or conduct research in the US.

Eligibility

A small number of awards are granted each year for New Zealand scholars to lecture and and/or conduct research at an American institution for three to five months each year.

Full awards are granted to applicants without any additional financial assistance during the award. Partial awards are granted to applicants receiving financial assistance, usually in the form of paid sabbaticals from their home institution.

Preference may be given to applicants for partial awards. These award are not intended for the main purpose of attending conferences or completing doctoral dissertations.

To be eligible, you must:

  • show professional distinction, leadership potential and the ability to be a cultural ambassador for New Zealand
  • have a PhD or the equivalent professional or artistic training or experience
  • not have held another Fulbright award in the past two years, and otherwise comply with the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board's policy on Previous Fulbright Grants
  • provide a full medical certificate if selected for interview
  • meet the citizenship requirements for this award:

Citizenship requirements

You are eligible to apply for this award if you:
  • are a New Zealand citizen
  • AND are not a permanent resident or citizen of the US
  • AND are not currently living in the US*

* Applicants outside New Zealand who are unable to attend an interview in person may be disadvantaged.

Preference for Fulbright awards is given to candidates who have not had extensive recent experience in the US.

Fulbright awards will not be granted for medical programmes which include any clinical activities involving direct patient care.

Entitlement

  • US$3,250 per month for partial awards or US $6,500 per month for full awards for 3-5 months
  • basic health and accident insurance cover up to a maximum of US$100,000
  • international travel of US$2,000 for grantee and US$2,000 for one dependent
  • the opportunity to participate in various programmes and activities available to Fulbright scholars in the US

  • You must plan to be in the US for a minimum of three months.
  • Your award term must fall within the period between 1 October in the year of application and 31 December of the year following application.
  • US immigration documentation must be completed from within New Zealand
  • International travel will only be funded between New Zealand and the US
  • In keeping with US immigration requirements and the philosophy of the Fulbright Programme, you will be required to return to New Zealand for a minimum of two years before becoming eligible for permanent residency in the US.

  • Attach a curriculum vitae and three letters of reference
  • Interviews will be held in Wellington in June
  • You will be advised of the outcome of your application within 8 weeks
