<p>Fulbright New Zealand invites you to a free public seminar by recently-returned alumna Veronica Tawhai, a lecturer in Māori development at Massey University’s School of Māori Studies, Te Pūtahi-a-Toi. Veronica received a 2012 Fulbright-Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Scholar Award to research indigenous assessments of the transformative potential of citizenship education, at the Center for World Indigenous Studies in Olympia, Washington.</p>
<p>In this seminar, Veronica will share insights learnt from indigenous political educators in the US about citizenship education, and particularly the new directions needed to foster wider understanding of indigenous rights, protest and aspirations for the future. Ethical matters concerning research with indigenous political leaders and activists will also be explored.</p>

<p>Fulbright New Zealand invites you to a free public seminar by Kathy Fox, a 2013 Fulbright US Scholar currently based at Victoria University of Wellington. An Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Vermont, Kathy is researching restorative re-entry of criminal offenders to the community.</p>
<p>In this seminar Kathy will compare restorative justice practices for offender re-entry in New Zealand with those in the US, and in particular her home state of Vermont. She will discuss opportunities for greater use of restorative practices in order to make offender re-entry community-based, more effective, and counter to the punitive approach to justice that has dominated the past several decades.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Fulbright Reflections series of panel discussions provides a unique opportunity for the public to personally meet New Zealand alumni of the Fulbright exchange programme, who will share their ideas and inspirations on a particular theme. They will engage with the audience in discussion and you will get to know these remarkable New Zealanders as people. These personal reflections will have wide appeal to people of all ages and interests.</p>
<p>The first instalment of Fulbright Reflections for 2013 will be presented in partnership with City Gallery Wellington, coinciding with the gallery’s major new exhibition of kinetic works from experimental filmmaker, sculptor, poet, painter and “composer of motion”, Len Lye. Lye was one of the most internationally influential and recognised New Zealand artists of the twentieth century, and spent a considerable part of his career based in the United States of America.</p>
<p><em>Fulbright Reflections: Experimental Art – Motion and Sound</em>, will feature three esteemed Fulbright alumni – Len Lye historian Roger Horrocks, Adam Art Gallery curator Michelle Menzies and intermedia artist Phil Dadson – sharing their personal stories of passion, inspiration and thought leadership in the field of experimental art, and their experiences in the art world of the US.</p>

<p>Roger Horrocks received a 1963 Fulbright New Zealand Graduate Award to complete a Master of Arts degree in English at the University of Minnesota.</p>
<p>After returning to New Zealand he worked at the University of Auckland, pioneering the teaching of contemporary American literature and the study of film. He was involved in the setting up of the Auckland International Film Festival, Alternative Cinema, Artspace, NZ On Air, NZ On Screen, Script to Screen, and various other organizations. He was a co-editor of the experimental magazines <em>And</em> and <em>Splash</em>.</p>
<p>Roger worked as Len Lye’s assistant in New York during the last year of the artist’s life and has since written a biography and directed a film about him, curated an exhibition of Lye’s art, and edited or co-edited three collections of his writings.</p>
<p>Roger is an Emeritus Professor of the University of Auckland and founding Head of its Film, Television and Media Studies Department. He has won various film awards and in 2004 was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the film and television industries.</p>
<h3>Michelle Menzies</h3>

<p>Michelle Menzies received a 2006 Fulbright New Zealand Graduate Award to complete a PhD in Literature at the University of Chicago. Her dissertation <em>Archives of Experience: Toward a Digital Aesthetics </em>argues a cultural history of digital aesthetics routed through the history of cinema, and analyses the aesthetics of movement in early film, contemporary art, modern poetry and the philosophy of Henri Bergson.</p>
<p>Michelle’s research interests focus on twentieth-century aesthetics, particularly phenomenology and critical theory. Ongoing topics of preoccupation include expanded cinema, digital style, film and poetics, and the intersection of film studies, film history and contemporary art.</p>
<p>Michelle has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Intermedia and Time Based Arts from the University of Auckland’s Elam School of Fine Arts. Her artistic practice is based in video, photography and installation. She was co-initiator and curator of the Window art project in Auckland, one of the first galleries in New Zealand to attempt a creative use of the internet through coupling physical and virtual exhibitions.</p>
<p>Michelle is Curator of Victoria University of Wellington’s Adam Art Gallery. She is a fellow of the New Zealand India Research Institute, and a reviewer for <em>Flash Art</em> and <em>Artforum</em> magazines.</p>
<h3>Phil Dadson</h3>

<p>Phil Dadson received a 1991 Fulbright New Zealand Cultural Development Award to research intermedia arts and experimental music at selected art institutions across the US.</p>
<p>Phil is a sound and intermedia artist with a transdisciplinary practice including video and sound installation, sound sculpture, construction of experimental musical instruments, music composition and improvised performance. He founded the original rhythm/performance group From Scratch in 1974, who perform with custom-built instruments made from industrial and natural materials. His kinetic sculptural works include <em>Akau Tangi</em> on Cobham Drive in Evan’s Bay, Wellington. In 2011 Phil was one of nine artists to travel on HMNZS Otago to the remote Kermadec Islands, resulting in a group exhibition at City Gallery Wellington from October 2012-February 2013. He recently travelled to Santiago, Chile for the opening of the <em>Kermadec</em> exhibition at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo.</p>
<p>Phil has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture from the University of Auckland’s Elam School of Fine Arts, and a Master of Arts with Honours from the University of Western Sydney. He received a Laureate Award from the Arts Foundation in 2001 and was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2005, for services to the arts.</p>

Organized by the United States | New Zealand Council in Washington, DC and the ﻿New Zealand United States Council in New Zealand, the Partnership Forum will combine innovative presentations, off-the record discussions, outstanding networking opportunities as well as tangible examples of what’s next.</p></blockquote>

<p>The Future Partners programme is a component of the Partnership Forum and its purpose is to enable a diverse group of emerging American and New Zealand leaders to participate fully and contribute actively to the discussion in the Partnership Forum. Their participation will encourage diversity of view and new thinking at the event, as well as assist a new generation of leadership to develop interest in global issues and in the NZ-US relationship, and gain new insights and connections.</p>
<p>20 places will be offered to New Zealand participants aged 20-30 who are studying or working in either New Zealand or the United States. Of these 20 places, up to 10 places will be reserved for current or former Fulbright grantees including those studying in the United States. Accommodation and most meals during the Forum will be provided. Selected participants who are New Zealand based will be provided with air transport to and from Washington, DC by the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The RNZAF plane’s flight plan is yet to be confirmed but it is likely to depart Wellington on 18 May in the morning, and arrive back at Whenuapai Air Force Base in Auckland on the morning of 25 May. Selected grantees will need to find their own way to Wellington, and from Whenuapai back to their home location. Participants resident in the United States or elsewhere will need to personally meet the costs of transport to and from Washington, DC.</p>
<p>Selection of participants will be based on the applicant’s past experience, future plans, ability to participate in the Forum and reasons for doing so, and desirable attributes such as strong interpersonal skills, ambassadorial qualities and leadership qualities and potential.</p>

<p>Fulbright New Zealand invites you to a free public seminar by alumnus Peter Griffin, manager of the Science Media Centre, editor of <a title="www.sciblogs.co.nz" href="http://www.sciblogs.co.nz">Sciblogs.co.nz</a> and technology columnist for the <em>New Zealand </em>Listener. Peter recently returned from two months researching public interest journalism in the US as a Fulbright-Harkness New Zealand Fellow. He visited centres of excellence including the Center for Public Integrity in Washington, DC, Propublica in New York and the Center for Health Reporting in Los Angeles.</p>
<p>In this seminar Peter will discuss lessons from the US about the future of news, and in particular, how public interest journalism that uncovers corruption and speaks truth to power can be carried out when the mainstream media is increasingly unable to pay for it.</p>

<h2>Fulbright New Zealand Travel Awards</h2>
<p>These awards, valued at up to NZ$5,000, are for New Zealand academics, artists or professionals to visit the US for 12 to 90 days in order to present their work to American audiences. Approximately twelve awards are offered each year. Recent grantees have included academic experts in ecological restoration of offshore islands, forensic science, and human digestive health, who will present their work at conferences and university lectures in the US.<br />

<h2>Fulbright-Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Travel Awards in Indigenous Development</h2>
<p>These awards, valued at up to NZ$5,000, are for New Zealand academics, artists or professionals to visit the US for 12 to 90 days in order to present their work on a theme of indigenous development to American audiences. A small number of awards are granted each year. Recent grantees will present their research into traditional Māori food crops, indigenous understandings of wellbeing, and indigenous and minority school achievement, at various US universities.<br />

<p>These awards, valued at up to US$11,700, are for New Zealand academic institutions to host US academics, artists or professionals for two to six week programmes of lectures, seminars, workshops, conferences or symposiums. Up to six awards are granted each year. Recent recipients of awards to host visiting Fulbright Specialists include Massey University, Unitec Institute of Technology, the University of Waikato and the University of Otago, who will host specialists in information technology in emergency management, family violence and sexual abuse prevention, and business law.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<blockquote><p>Fulbright New Zealand and the New Zealand Harkness Fellowships Trust invite applications for the Fulbright-Harkness New Zealand Fellowship, which offers the opportunity for an emerging New Zealand leader in any field of study or vocation other than health care* to study or research in the US for a minimum of six weeks. Successful grantees will receive NZ$15,000 (plus a basic health benefit plan) towards a short fellowship programme of their own design at any US university or institution.</p></blockquote>
<p>The Fulbright-Harkness New Zealand Fellowship aims to reinforce New Zealand-United States links by improving cross-fertilisation of ideas and experience between the two countries; to enable established or potential leaders and opinion formers in New Zealand to benefit from new ideas, practices and contacts in the US; and to increase Fellow’s abilities to bring about change and improvements in New Zealand.</p>
<p>Previous Fulbright-Harkness New Zealand Fellows include Sacha McMeeking from Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, who spent three months researching the role of indigenous leadership in corporate citizenship at Northwestern University’s prestigious Kellogg School of Management in Evanston, Illinois. The 2012 Fellow, Peter Griffin from the Science Media Centre, is currently in the US undertaking an intensive seven week research programme into public interest journalism. Peter has visited many high profile media organisations including the Center for Public Integrity in Washington, DC and the California HealthCare Foundation Center for Health Reporting in Oakland, California.
