Education and Society in Aotearoa New Zealand

Paul Adams et al

Education & Society in Aotearoa New ZealandBeginning with a broad introduction to the nature of
society, this book goes on to consider the hidden, and not so hidden, structures and processes of education. After examining various ongoing struggles over curriculum and administration, it concludes by analysing a range of theories which purport to explain differences in educational achievement.

This book has been designed for students studying education for the first time and will also be of particular interest to parents who would like to ensure their children's educational success.

Reforming Education: the New Zealand Experience 1984 - 1996

Graham and Susan Butterworth

Reforming Education - the New Zealand ExperienceThis book is the first scholarly history of a major sectoral reform and its relationship to the wider government restructuring. It is based on archival material and on extensive interviews with many of the key figures of the period; ministers, educators, public servants and sectoral representatives.

The authors found a far more complex and fascinating story than that of the slogans ('Tomorrow's Schools') and headlines. They consider that the changes in education were as much a revolution from below as an imposition from above. This book is essential reading not only for educators, but for anyone interested in the 'New Zealand Revolution'.
