Executive summary
Most American students have not been exposed to another nation's
viewpoint concerning the indigenous peoples. Thus, they have an "isolationism
perspective" concerning the United States and their policy towards
Native Americans. The purpose of this curriculum project is foster a
bi-national perspective to give students the opportunity to understand
the Māori's Treaty of Waitangi and compare it to United States'
treaties as they relate to the indigenous peoples. By studying the two
countries' treaties and governmental policy on indigenous peoples,
students can better understand the effects and outcomes of the Māori
and of the Native Americans.
