Day 19: Fri, 30 July

An Introduction to Maori Art

Speaker: Ngarino Ellis

Ngarino is from Ngapuhi and Ngäti Porou and her primary interest is the field of traditional Mäori art. Her recently-published book (Te Ata: Mäori Art from the East Coast) builds on the work in her PhD which focuses on the carving tradition of Ngati Porou. Over the next 3 years Ngarino is working as part of a research team which is looking at Tä moko. Her particular focus is on the use of Tä moko in/as self-portraiture and portraiture, and the history of its use as signature. She is also interested in gender divisions in Mäori art and those who have transcended these, ie women who have carved, both skin and wood. Ngarino teaches at the University of Auckland.
