Eighteen top American Fulbright graduate students, Ian Axford Fellows and Eisenhower Fellows will arrive in Wellington next week to begin post-graduate study and research at universities throughout the country. Their first stop is Wellington where they will participate in a week-long intensive orientation programme. The visitors will be introduced to New Zealand and Maori culture and language, public policy and the political system, the Treaty of Waitangi, as well as a session on what to expect in the university environment. They will also discuss culture shock and views about Americans. The orientation will include an overnight stay on Waiwhetu marae and a trip to Kapiti Island. The winners of the distinguished American Fulbright Graduate Student Awards and Senior Scholar Awards for 2005 will study in fields as diverse as environmental management, cultural heritage management, electronic government, film-making, education, engineering, health science, English and Maori cultural renaissance at Victoria University, the Universities of Canterbury, Lincoln, Auckland and Waikato and the Turnbull Library. The Ian Axford Fellows will be based at Treasury and the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Health and Te Puni Kokiri, studying poverty issues, health care and Maori policy. The Eisenhower Fellows will travel throughout New Zealand examining various
