Four Victoria University graduates are heading to America to carry out post-graduate study after receiving four of the nine Fulbright awards for 2005. The awards, valued at US$15,000 each, plus return travel to the US, are for promising graduate students who show academic excellence, leadership potential and the ability to be cultural ambassadors for New Zealand. Rana Abboud, who has a Bachelor of Architecture from Victoria, is going to the University of California at Berkeley to do a Master of Architecture, specialising in virtual reality technologies. "The internet has gradually incorporated more and more visual graphics - the shift from a text-based medium to a virtual 'environment' where information is located is slowly becoming a reality," says Rana. "This will have an impact on the design of built architecture and its perception in society. I am interested in the implications of these future online environments on architectural design." Keith Bolland is going to the New School University in New York to do a PhD in political science. He has a Bachelor of Arts (1st Class Hons) in political science from Victoria. Keith is interested in American political culture and American political development. "The language and customs of the American political environment are genuinely exceptional. I want to look at how things came to be that way, especially how American politics has developed in the last forty years or so since Kennedy proclaimed that the torch had been passed to a new generation." Alastair Cameron is going to New York University to do an LLM, specialising in public international law and comparative constitutional law. He has an LLB (Hons) from Victoria University. "My objective is to consider the impact of international law and governance on the domestic, constitutional and administration arrangements of the American states," says Alastair. "In particular, I intend to examine how states can respond to challenges and opportunities presented by globalisation to improve the living standards of citizens." Listener journalist Matt Nippert, who has a Bachelor of Arts in public policy from Victoria, is going to pursue a Masters at the Columbia School of Journalism. Matt is aiming to study investigative techniques, media criticism and government affairs. "Journalism in New Zealand is more a trade than a profession, with academic study limited to the diploma level." Matt anticipates his studies will equip him to better understand and report on the development and implementation of public policy decisions. In 2006 up to 20 awards, each valued at US$25,000 plus return travel to the US, will be offered to New Zealand graduate students. Awards are granted for advanced academic study in the US.
