AUT graduate Matt Nippert has won a Fulbright award to pursue a masters degree at the Columbia School of Journalism. The awards, valued at US$15,000 each plus travel to the US, are for promising graduate students who show academic excellence, leadership potential and the ability to be cultural ambassadors for New Zealand. An air of rarefied history attracted him to New York, says Nippert. "The school was founded in 1912 by one Mr Pulitzer. With a mayoral election this year, and the United Nations headquarters across town, there should be something to write home about." Nippert is aiming to study investigative techniques, media criticism and government affairs. "Journalism here is more a trade than a profession, with academic study limited to the diploma level." After graduating, Nippert will return to his job as a feature writer at the Listener. "Hopefully I'll be a little wiser," says Nippert. He anticipates his studies will equip him to better understand and report on the development and implementation of public policy decisions. He will continue to write for the Listener as a New York correspondent. After graduating with a first class honours degree in public policy from Victoria University, Nippert was deputy editor at Salient in 2003. He then went on to complete AUT's Graduate Diploma in Journalism in 2004. His writing then and since saw him in 2004 win the student print section of the Media Peace awards, and the general feature and young writer gongs at the Qantas media awards. Nippert grew up in Lower Hutt, and now lives in Point Chevalier, Auckland. His recent stories in the Listener include Born Bad? In 2006, up to 20 Fulbright graduate awards, each valued at US$25,000 plus return travel to the US, will be offered. Awards are granted for advanced academic study in the US.
