Wellington historian Giselle Byrnes leaves shortly for Washington, DC to take up her position as Fulbright Visiting Lecturer in New Zealand Studies at Georgetown University’s Center for Australian and New Zealand Studies (CANZ).
Dr Giselle Byrnes will teach an introductory course in New Zealand history, with a focus on race relations, for the university’s fall semester from August until December. "I want to introduce Georgetown students to New Zealand’s incredibly exciting history and encourage them to see that there are common experiences that bind us together, rather than divide us," says Dr Byrnes. "I’m also looking forward to the opportunity to broaden my own intellectual horizons; to seize this chance to learn and enrich my own teaching and research back here in New Zealand." While at Georgetown, Dr Byrnes will also conduct research examining historical treaties between governing polities and indigenous peoples, placing New Zealand’s Treaty of Waitangi within a broader historical context in terms of colonial treaty-making. "I’m interested in understanding how New Zealand’s history fits in terms of larger processes such as colonisation and challenging assumptions that New Zealand’s historical experiences are ‘exceptional’ or unique. I’m keen to explore how comparative and transnational approaches to the study of history can open up new perspectives on the past (and the present)." A Senior Lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington, Dr Byrnes is currently editing The New Oxford History of New Zealand, to be published by Oxford University Press in 2008. Her previous book, The Waitangi Tribunal and New Zealand History, was published by OUP in 2004. In taking up the Fulbright Visiting Lectureship at Georgetown, Dr Byrnes follows in the footsteps of esteemed New Zealand educators including historians Michael King and James Belich, poet Bill Manhire and playwright Roger Hall, all of whom have taught at CANZ. From next year Fulbright New Zealand will offer two visiting lectureships – one per semester. ENDS Links:
