Visas and predeparture

So now that you've been accepted into an American university, it's time to prepare for your trip to the United States.

Travel arrangements

Plan to organise your travel to the US about three months before you intend to leave. Late August and early September are peak times for travel to and within the US so the earlier you organise your tickets the better.

Student visas

There are two main types of visas that are issued to students wishing to study at US universities - a Student Visa and an Exchange Visitor Visa.

New visa regulations specify that a personal interview at the US Consulate in Auckland may be required, so give yourself plenty of time.

Student Visa (F-visa)

In order to get a student visa to study at university in the US you need to first be accepted into a full-time course of study at an accredited university. The university will provide you with a form called the "I-20." Once you receive this form you may apply for a student visa.

For directions on applying for your student visa please see the American Embassy 's website.

^topExchange Visitor Visa (J-visa)

Graduate students to the US may be offered an exchange visitor visa rather than a student visa. Again, in order to get an exchange visitor visa you first need to be accepted into a full-time course of study at an accredited university. The university or exchange visitor-sponsoring agency will provide you with a form called the DS-2019. Once you receive this form you may apply for a visa.

For directions on applying for your exchange visitor visa please see the American Embassy's website.

Successful Fulbright grantees to the US will be given an exchange visitor visa and they will receive their DS-2019 from Fulbright New Zealand or the Institute of International Exchange.
